The Descendants of Ernest Herbert LOMAX (1874? - June 1, 1952) and Flora VAN AUKEN (1872 - December 11, 1940)

Ernest H. LOMAX was born in Canadensis, Monroe Co., Pennsylvania, presumably on the farm of his parents, Robert Owen LOMAX and Elizabeth PYE. There is some question about his birth date. In the 1880 census his age was given as 6, putting his birth date before June 7 in the year 1874, or after June 7 in the year 1873. This is consistent with his obituary, which gave his age as 78 on June 1, 1952. However, in the index of the 1900 census [7], his birthdate is shown as "Jun" or "Jan" of 1872, and his age is shown as 28. His name does not appear in the census index of Pennsylvania in 1910, but in 1920, the census taker recorded his age as 44 [9].

Sometime before 1910 Ernest married Flora Van Auken. Flora was the daughter of Cyrus Van Auken (September, 1830 - 1911) and Mary Ann Van Campen (August 16, 1840 - September 5, 1923). The Van Aukens and Van Campens are old Dutch families who emigrated to New Amsterdam in the mid-17th century, settling in Esopus (now Kingston). Some descendants of the original settlers migrated down the Old Mine Road from Esopus to the Minisink region (the Delaware river valley around Port Jervis, NY, Milford, PA, and Montague, NJ). The reader interested in Van Auken genealogy would do well to visit the web site of Brad Van Auken.

Ernest was employed as an inspector for the Erie Railroad. This employment took him to various locations where rolling stock was being fabricated, but the family lived for many years in Stroudsburg, Monroe Co., PA, not far from Ernest's boyhood home in Canadensis.

Ernest and Flora had one daughter, Marie LOMAX (February 6, 1910 - November 27, 1985). She was a nurse, and was employed for some years at a private hospital for children in New Jersey, which was operated by the Victoria Foundation. Dorothy married Rolland Davis EVERITT (July 15, 1903 - July 4, 1960) of Stroudsburg, and formerly of Montague, Sussex Co., NJ. The EVERITTs were residents of Sussex County since the mid-18th century, and much is known about them. The interested reader is referred to the several articles available. Rolland's last occupation, which he held for many years, was as credit manager of Monroe County General Hospital.

Rolland and Dorothy had one child, Rolland Davis EVERITT, Jr. (your author, born January 4, 1953). I married Linda Susan MCNAMARA (nee MARQUARDT) in 1986, and adopted her daughter, whose name is now Kimberly May McNamara EVERITT (b. 1/2/1975). I am employed as an information developer at Early, Cloud & Company, an IBM company.
