The Mallatratt Family in the 1870 US Census

To date, the only Mallatratt households I have discovered in the 1870 census were in Philadelphia, Pennsyl vania. The information that was recorded for these families on June 24, 1870 in the Germantown section of Philadelphia County is as follows [1]:

Conclusions and guesses

• These Mallatratt families, living in close proximity, all stocking weavers, all from England, were almost certainly close relatives.
• Based on the ages and birth places of their children (and assuming that Wilhemina, Annie and Samuel were their children), the earliest that Joseph and Elizabeth Mallatratt could have left England would have been late June, 1853, and the latest that they could have arrived in Pennsylvania would have been late June, 1855.
• Based on the ages and birth places of their children (and assuming that Annie, Helen, Harriet and Mary were their children), the earliest that Samuel and Annie Mallatratt could have left England would have been Late June 1841, and the latest they could have arrived in Pennsylvania would have been late June, 1850. It therefore seems impossible that both families could have arrived together.
• Frederick Neiman, the Prussian carpenter had a family of Mallatratts (Samuel and Mary) under his roof, along with the unfortunately named Eli Leech. All at this dwelling were enumerated as a single family, not as separate families in the same dwelling. This fact, along with the fact that his wife and daughter (if such they were) have names that occur among the other Mallatratt families, leeds one to suspect that Frederick Neiman was an in-law of the Mallatratts. If so, he was not the only in-law in the neighborhood--Henry Pye and his wife Elizabeth Mallatrat Pye lived a few doors away, and were visited by the census taker on the same day (dwelling 1200, family 1237) [2].
